Four Oh in Twenty Twelve

Happy New Year! Things are usually quiet here on the blog in January and this year has been no different. The past few weeks have flown by and I can't believe it's almost Feb already.
I never make New Year's resolutions, but this year I am making some "resolutions" for lack of a better word. They appear to be New Year's related because of the timing but it's actually goals I have for the coming year before I turn 40 in December.
I had my husband take this photo on my birthday- what I'm employing in this pic is called strategery...if you don't like your body, hide it with cute kids! :)

So, my first goal for the year is to lose at least 15lbs. My husband decided to start a new plan as well so since the start of the new year we've both been logging our calories and exercise on myfitnesspal.com (LOVE that site!) It's so easy entering your food (and kind of fun!) and I'm a very visual person so being able to see exactly how many calories I have to work with for the day is key. So far I'm down 5lbs and it hasn't really felt like dieting so as soon as I'm done writing this post, off to the gym I go!

I thought I would have a "40 before 40" list, but so far I'm nowhere near 40 things... but I'll keep adding on to it. Right now here are few:
Go ziplining
Go to a movie by myself
Take a winery tour/wine tasting
Get at least one chemical peel
Vacation for us sans kids
Check out some Charlotte museums- there is so much of this city that I haven't seen!
Have our family pics done-it's been almost 2 yrs so it's time!
Get a full physical- I'm embarrassed to admit how long it's been since I've had one

I'm looking forward to the coming year and closing out my 30's with a bang!

It truly feels like school just started and the holidays weren't even on my radar. I'm trying to get the house decorated and am having tree light issues so I thought I'd take a break and try and play some catch up on the blog. This session was in October- yes that's how behind I am. It's been a very busy season (which is good!) but, when something has to give it's always the blog.
Anyway, I've gushed about this family many times before...and for good reason. In the past 3 yrs I think they've had like a dozen sessions? If I had a frequent client punch card, there's would have been filled many times over :)
To me they are friends and I love seeing them. Our sessions are always easy and laid back and they are up for anything which I also love.
Kristen, I'm so sorry it took me this long to do a blog post- I know you like to see which ones I pick!

August in November

Since this session was in August, I'm guessing I'll get around to blogging my current sessions sometime next year.
Last year one of my neighbors was hosting an event and asked me if I'd be interested in donating something for the auction to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It's a cause that's near and dear to me as my brother is a Hodgkin's survivor. This young lady's mom won the session and was looking for some photos to use for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah. And since it was 30 degrees this morning, these pics make me miss the late summer, late evening sun!

Not a Writer

I wish I was better at writing blog posts- I have the images, I get ideas about topics (unrelated to sessions) and yet when I want to post session images I go blank. Not because I don't have thoughts about my wonderful clients because I do- I have amazing clients who've been around since my beginnings many years ago. But, I don't want to just throw out a blanket "this family is great" because it sounds insincere and doesn't convey how I truly feel. Just know when you see your images on here, even if the wording is brief it is not for lack of thought or caring. But, there is a reason I'm a photographer and not a writer :)
All that being said, I am so happy this gorgeous family chose to do the first year sessions. I mean, look at this little girl- I could photograph her all day every day and never tire of it! And I have a little soft spot for the big brothers as well.

Real Housewives in Atlanta

This past weekend I got away for a little girl time in Atlanta with my friend Aileen. We've been friends for over 10 yrs and met when we lived in Maryland. We both happened to migrate South within months of each other about 6 years ago- she to Nashville and me to Charlotte. We picked Atlanta because it's about the same distance away for each of us, not to mention the fabulous shopping and dining opportunities.
I received some awesome recommendations on spots to hit from Alston and they did not disappoint!

We stayed in Buckhead and had an awesome dinner Friday night at The Horseradish Grill. I was quite busy "Instagramming"(I'm bowerstudio on there) but somehow didn't document our dinner there.
Saturday was all about the shopping- here is just a taste...

This little area was heaven and from a design standpoint was just a feast for the eyes. Beautiful design was everywhere from the complimentary umbrella stands, to the restroom doors (not kidding) All of it GORGEOUS.
We lunched at JCT Kitchen- again, I was just in awe of the details (not to mention the food) I mean, don't you just want to live here?

I had the most delicious lamb burger with goat cheese and basil. Fueled up, we headed out for more shopping and worked up an appetite for our last dinner in town.

We had the 2 gals at the table next to ours snap this and I should've known better than to allow this angle- not flattering! Thankfully I at least was able to crop out most of my body.
Yet another fabulous meal at Eclipse Di Luna for Tapas. Sooo good. Anytime I can eat empanadas, olives, Marcona almonds, lamb meatballs, risotto style potatoes and beef tenderloin in one sitting is a good thing.

Getting out of dodge for the weekend was just what I needed and definitely flew by, but I'm excited to head into the very busy holiday season and I'm recharged and ready to go! :)

Party Time!

When Mom emailed me to see if I'd be interested in shooting her son's 3rd birthday party, I jumped at it... who doesn't love a party :) As the mom of a superhero lover, I loved seeing all of the cute details. And, for future reference bouncy slide + water = AWESOME.

Pen Pals

When I was a kid, I had a few pen pals. The first one lived in Austria and I don't remember exactly how we were paired up, but it was from the show Big Blue Marble (anybody else remember that show?). We wrote for a few years, but the language barrier was an issue. In my early teens, Teen magazine had a pen pal match up. I remember how cool it was receiving that first letter in the mail, and little did I know that those letters would continue through high school and beyond.

I still have those letters, and thanks to Facebook we're in touch once again. I loved reading through some of them again.

The first one is postmarked 1987, and I think the last one I have is from 1996. We went from talking about our high school classes, friends, and activities to choosing colleges, going away to college, finding jobs, getting married. I had the opportunity to visit her once during that time and spend time with her family and see her hometown and meet the friends she wrote about. I'm sure she'd love that I'm posting this pic, but this was from that visit (oh how I loved those Tretorns)

It was also fun seeing all of my past addresses-

So, it comes as no surprise that when I had the chance to sign my oldest up for a pen pal I jumped at it. If you have boys, you must read Allison's blog All for the Boys. It is one of my favorites, and I LOVE that she had the idea to get these boys writing!

When I told my oldest that I signed him up for it, he seemed a little skeptical, but knowing that he would be receiving mail I think won him over. He's been waiting anxiously, and the big day finally arrived today. It was so cute watching him read his first letter, and he started talking about what sort of things he wants to write about and possibly send to his new pal. I really hope he sticks with it, and learns to love it the way I did.

I spent a late summer evening with this family last month- some family was visiting from out of town and they wanted to get everyone together for some pics. I loved seeing the grandparents surrounded by all of the grandkids. You can't tell by the photos, but it was HOT. And HOT. And did I mention HOT? :)

I am woefully behind on the blog. Re-entry into the back to school schedule has been tough for all of us. I thought I would hit the ground running the minute they started school and be checking things off my project list left and right. That hasn't quite happened. I have been productive... here and there. I actually have a bunch of sessions to blog (and the editing of those is what I was working on while they were at school) but, I didn't want to forget to post the other half of the back to school pics.

There were no tears from either of us on the big day- he was more than ready to go! Saying goodbye to preschool and closing that chapter was hard for me (and I still miss it) but, starting kindergarten is exciting and I knew he would love it. Since we're over 3 weeks in, I can say it's going well. The long day is the biggest adjustment.

He's also more willing than big brother to go along with my photo ops :)

Back to school

Although I'm excited for the kids to go back to school, I am a little sad to see the summer end. We've had a good summer, and I've gotten used to our lazy mornings!
Today is the first day of school for my oldest- my BABY who is heading to Kindergarten won't go until Monday. I feel like it was just yesterday that big brother was Kindergarten bound, and now both will be at the same school.
There are complaints galore when I demand the "first day of school" pics before we leave (and not just from the kids - yes Eric I'm looking at you) but in looking back over the past few years of school photos, I'm so glad I have these. It's amazing how quickly they change, and even if I can only manage to get one or two out of them at least I'm able to document that moment.

My big boy (who was very excited to head back today) and his elementary journey thus far...

Family Vacation- Lessons Learned

Last week we took our "big" vacation for the summer, and it's the longest one we've done to date with the kids. We've done a few quick, long weekend jaunts here and there, but since we haven't traveled a lot with them we are definitely still learning.
Here's what people don't really tell you... sometimes traveling/vacationing with kids totally sucks. There I said it. And, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that at one point in this trip my husband and I were ready to pack everything up and head home early.
But, we didn't. And I'm glad.
We headed to Orlando with high hopes of all the fun they would have on the various Universal rides (we didn't do Disney, just Universal) My 5 yr old has talked non-stop for months about the ones he was most looking forward to- Spiderman, Terminator, Jaws... it became apparent almost immediately that it just wasn't going to happen. After 2 days, many attempts and hours spent in the searing sun we felt defeated. I mean, we came here FOR THE RIDES and now neither of them would get on a single one. That was when we almost called it quits. But, I could tell from their reactions that they didn't understand why we were so upset.
Here's what I want to take away from this trip (and I knew this already, but it's easy to forget) Sometimes you have to let go of what YOUR expectations of the vacation are, and what YOU think is fun or should be fun for them. Once we did that it was better and more relaxed for everyone. And, that just because there are meltdowns and some not so fun moments that you probably won't forget, they do. They don't remember the bad.
Sometimes my husband gives me a hard time about the photos I share from certain experiences because he says it paints a very different picture than what it was. It's true that I don't really document the meltdowns etc, but it's not because I'm trying to make us look like the Waltons it's just that they don't remember any of that. Here's a snippet of the week...
On the way there- Road Trip Bingo was a hit, and a quick catch during our lunch stop.

This is what I choose to remember and where I wish I still was every afternoon. 3 words: Frozen Vodka Lemonade

This was probably one of their favorite spots at the parks- the Curious George playground area. I was a fan because I could sit in the shade with misting fans.

Again, it was a fun trip and if you ask the kids they had a blast and that's what matters :)

Pigtails & Crewcuts Blakeney

The Blakeney Pigtails & Crewcuts recently ran a Facebook contest in search of the 2011 models to be used in future advertising spots. I was honored to be asked by the owners Mike and Hailey Arthur to photograph the winners at the salon.
In fact, I think my first reaction was similar to this...

These 2 kiddos were so adorable and you would never know by looking at some of these images that they had never met before!

One of the reasons I was so excited to be asked to do this is because we're big fans of this particular location. With 2 short haired boys in the house, we're there every few weeks. I love supporting local small business owners, especially ones as awesome as Hailey and Mike :) It's an added bonus that we live within walking distance, and my boys both love going.

Charleston has 2 very energetic playmates to keep him busy, and it will be so cute to see them all grow by leaps and bounds in the coming years!

Big brother happens to be the good friend of my youngest son. They've been preschool buddies for a few years, and in the fall they will be in Kindergarten together *sniff* at the same school.

I stumbled on Andrea's awesome blog the other week and this post caught my eye... when I saw she had Peppermint listed as one of her favorites, I knew I liked her. Exhibit A: My childhood copy of Peppermint (complete with .25 price tag) that now lives in my oldest son's room

Run, don't walk to the nearest store and get this color. It's Orly, in Terracotta. I very rarely get "real" pedicures... maybe once a year? Whether it's due to my cheapness or my laziness, I am a DIY gal in the nail dept. And you'd think since I've been painting my own nails for 30+ years I would be quite good at it. I'm not. I'm certain there are 10 year old girls who could do a better job. That being said, since I've bought this color I've been stopped TWICE and asked either where I had my pedicure done or the one time I was at WalMart and the woman standing next to me remarked that I obviously had just had a pedicure because they looked so good (I had painted them 2 weeks earlier) This stuff is magic people!

And, here it is on. This photo has 2 favorites- the aforementioned polish of the Gods, and my favorite summer shoe. Unfortunately, these suckers aren't available anywhere anymore! Dear Dr. Scholls, PLEASE make more Twist 2 sandals. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I also have a pair of black patent ones- LOVE.

The coaches for my youngest's soccer class use that line a lot and it was something I kept in the back of my mind when I set out to take some pics of them today. They were actually fairly cooperative, but with way more face making than I would have liked. I always take pics around their birthday, and Owen's was over a month ago and I hadn't done his yet so I figured I would push my luck and attempt both of them. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the outing (considering it was lightning fast as well) and I won't be pitching a fit :)

Not sure why, but I love posts containing people's iPhone pics. I'm sure you can see where I'm headed...
I take a fair amt with my iPhone, but I'm going to start taking more. Even when the quality is not up to par, I almost always print them out for my Project Life album. It's such an easy way to document the goings ons in the moment. I still take the bulk of my personal photos with the "good" camera, but there are so many little moments that would be missed if I relied on that alone. I'm also lucky in that my husband has really embraced the iPhone camera. He actually takes way more than I do, and loves to experiment with different filters etc.
So, I'm going to try and regularly post some of my favorites here- these were just a few that just came off my phone.

Loving right now- my daily cup of tea in my Y&R mug. Don't judge :) I am a creature of habit and love routine of any kind. After school dropoffs I like to have a cup of green tea, a Luna bar and check email/blogs etc. This particular tea is my new fav. The orange reminds me of Fruit Stripe gum so what's not to like. As for the admission to loving The Young & the Restless, I'm not embarrassed in the slightest. It's also part of my daily routine. In fact, if it's pre-empted for some reason my whole day just feels off.

Our soon to be new couch. We picked some custom fabric so it will take a little longer, but I can't wait to get it!

The fabulous weather we've been having- anytime they can just be outside and tire themselves out it's a good thing.

Another routine or ritual- we love us some Panera. We usually grab lunch out at least once on the weekends and this is definitely our preferred spot. These are from this past Saturday... EJ brought along his new favorite library book along with his Pokemon cards.

After lunch I took them strawberry picking- it was the perfect day for it because it was warm, but not hot.

I got to spend back to back weekends with little guys celebrating their first birthdays- both also have adorable older brothers. I remember celebrating that milestone in our own house and I was mindful to capture the little things that say "baby" that will give way all too soon to big kid features. The curls, tiny toes, chubby legs... documenting those details is one of my favorite things.

It's still hard for me to believe we had the final first year session for little T when it seems like only yesterday that I was doing the same for his big brother. I have loved seeing them every 3 months over this past year, and I always look forward to my time with them. We had fun exploring The Green uptown and the boys were troopers as always because it was a little chilly and misty that early!

Project Life

I'm trying to get caught up on work but with Spring Break and now a sick kid it's probably going to be next week until I have time to sit down and crank out some blog posts.
But, this is one I've wanted to blog about before now- in fact, I took these photos back in Feb.
I first learned about Project Life when Kelly Willette mentioned it on her blog I was definitely intrigued- once upon a time I was diligent about keeping up on photo albums. True, it was easier because it was pre-digital so I already had everything printed and it was as easy as just slipping the prints into pockets.
I've struggled with how to keep up since switching to digital. I've done photobooks (and still like them for some things) but I was never able to include enough pics. And I am not a scrapbooker so digital scrapbooking didn't appeal to me.

Project Life was exactly what I was looking for- it makes me keep up on printing pics that otherwise would just live forever on my hard drive, but it's also about documenting and remembering all of the little day to day things. I can include the kid's artwork/school papers, tickets and other ephemera (love that word :)
I love everything about it- the patterns and designs on the journaling cards, the ability to personalize it with additional page protectors since it's basically a 3-ring binder.
I'll have to take some updated pics soon. It's a large binder so I keep it in a cute basket under the coffee table. It's easy for me to just pull out and work on when I have the time.
I highly recommend the Project Life system! Take a look around Becky's blog for inspiration as well as Ali Edwards whose weekly Project Life updates are one of my favorites!

Hello 2011

I'll be honest, our 2011 had quite a rocky start. In the first week we had a dead hot water heater and a case of strep. The following week house arrest due to snow as well as 2 more streps and another with a random virus. The following week more missed school for continued illness. The rest of Jan and Feb offered up more viruses, and 2 more streps. I mean, really?
March seemed to turnaround, yet as I write this I'm home with a 5 yr old with a stomach bug. I. AM. OVER. IT.
It wasn't all bad... there were fun Cub Scout events/outings, the start of baseball and just last week celebrating my youngest's 5th birthday. I have a couple of sessions I need to blog as well.

I've also updated my "look" a bit too. Designed a new logo and have given the blog a little facelift. I'm still tweaking it some but am happy with where it is at right now. My goal is to do a switch-a-roo with the domain so this is my main site...I just don't have time to update a site and blog (as is evidenced by the 4yrs since my site has been touched!)

Anyway, I'll get back to posting more regularly... I promise!

And, every year even though I swear I won't buy anything new I always do. It's especially hard since the kids are so into it and love when I put everything out! I'm still on the hunt for a nice kid-friendly Nativity (something unbreakable)...

I was excited when my friend Stacey asked if she could purchase a gift certificate for her mom for Mother's Day this past Spring (if you're interested in purchasing a gift certificate, let me know!) She mentioned that her mom is not a fan of having her pic taken, but she wanted to get some of her parents with the kids. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful fall day for our session, and I have so many favorites it was hard to choose which ones to show here!

Not mine literally, but whenever I see a family of 3 boys I think of that show. Baby Bryce should have it pretty easy with 2 protective older brothers to watch out for him. We tried to get him sleepy towards the end, and he did briefly close his eyes but I think he was still not happy with us for taking him out in the chilly air at the beginning of the session. :)

You'll find a lot of this family on my blog :) I got to see them a few weeks ago for T's 6 month session. Mom might think differently, but it seems like we were just doing his newborn pics. Time really does fly the second time around!

Summer in a Jar

It's hard to believe that summer is over (although it certainly still feels like summer) I'll probably do another post with some of our summer pics, but this was something I put together yesterday and the boys love it.
A few weeks ago we took a last minute trip to the beach for a long weekend. It was big for them because we hadn't been to the beach with them yet (awful, I know) They were SO excited and one of the things they most wanted to do was collect shells. I've always loved doing it as well so I encouraged it. EJ was into for a time, but moved on to other things but Owen employed the "no shell left behind" technique of collecting. It was cute to watch him just grab anything and throw it in the bucket. I wanted to keep what we brought home and find a way to make it a keepsake of sorts for them to remember their first time at the beach.
Enter my new favorite jar from Target ($4.99!!) and I made up a quick little photo to tuck into the front and that's it.

3 yrs 3 mos

Stats: Big brother age 3- have been photographing him every 6 mos since his first birthday. We now know his "currency"... a little candy goes a long way!
Baby brother age 3 months- already old hat at this, and I'm so very lucky that I get to document both of them!
I really treasure our sessions (even though I'm sure Mom & Dad don't believe me) Believe me, I know how easy it is to get hung up on the perfect outfits, location, kid's behavior etc. (that's part of the reason I schedule our own family pics so I know what it's like on the other side of the camera!) But, you can't go wrong when you give up a *little* control and just roll with it... and that's why I love them. They suggest new places and don't bat an eye when I suggest something out of the ordinary as well.

I think of all of our sessions to date, this was my favorite :)
We used to have to work a little to get him in front of me and somewhat still- now I get this without even trying :)

Three times two

Such a fun session! And, I fell in love with the location mom picked out (I will definitely be returning!) We even had a brief stop at the NoDa fire station - since Dad is a firefighter we had an in :)
They are really too cute for words, and are very excited about the fact that they are now 3!

I know Mother's Day was last week, but this session took place the day before. I love the mother and son moments that we captured that day- I try to think of the type of pics I would want with my own kids (which we did recently and I'll have to post some :)
I think especially for moms, it's so hard to get pics with our kids- we're always the one behind the camera, we hate having our pic taken, we want to lose a few lbs, the list goes on. So, moms be forewarned: if you have a session with me coming up YOU WILL be in at least one of the photos....you can thank me later :)
And, it's families like this that make my "job" easy. Could they be more good-looking?

I was so excited to meet this little guy, and get a little baby fix! Neland is going to be a great big brother and it will be so much fun to see these two grow up. Kristen, as a mom of two boys I have a few tidbits of advice for you- enjoy every moment (even the crazy newborn stage) because it flies. Get on board with potty humor... one day in the not too distant future it will be part of their everyday vernacular :) Pretty soon your days will be filled with Legos, cars, Star Wars, superheroes and sports- and it's the best :)

It was a year and a half ago when I met this wonderful family for N's one year pics. This was our third session together and the last one with their little family of 3! Little N will soon be big brother N and I couldn't be more excited for them, and can't wait to meet the little boy that will join them. They definitely "get" me and I just love that. What I love even more is that Chris is so involved and actually excited about our sessions. I know that for most husbands, having family pics done ranks up there with clothes shopping or trips to the dentist. :)
He actually picked the location uptown for this session and we finally got a nice weekend!

I swear I'm still alive! Since the holidays, time has just flown by. We wrapped up our bathroom reno and since then between bad weather and illness in the house, I haven't really been working. I desperately need to redo my site, my blog... you name it!
Speaking of weather, even though I'm so looking forward to the end of this winter, we had a wonderful snow last night. It was beautiful when we woke up and perfect for playing in. Even better that it happened on a Saturday and was gone by the afternoon! Hopefully the weather will start cooperating and I'll have some sessions to blog soon!

I am officially done with sessions for 2009- just finishing up some print and card orders. I want to thank all of my clients for a wonderful year! Things in our house have been crazy to say the least lately. In addition to the usual Christmas rush, I was also prepping, planning and decorating for my husband's 40th birthday party which took place last night... we had such a good time (and we're paying for it today!) On top of all of that, due to some water damage that was discovered, we've had to completely gut and remodel our master bathroom. So, right now there's a toilet sitting in our master bedroom and a gaping hole in our guest room ceiling where the water poured through. I look forward to it being finished and I'll post some before and after pics once we're done. Oh, and I've gotten completely sucked into the whole Twilight craze and stay up much too late reading the goings-on of Edward, Bella & Jacob.
In the meantime, here are just a few pics of our holiday decor and one of the pics I used for our holiday card.

Mom and I met through our neighborhood's Women's Club and I'm so glad I got the chance to photograph them...the kids were easy, fun and photogenic and Mom and Dad got in on some action too ;)

Last Saturday I got to spend the morning with 2 great families- the sisters wanted to do back to back sessions so we could attempt a few shots with all of the kids- we also got both families together. It was foggy, misty and humid but thankfully didn't rain... that held off until it was time for trick or treating.
First up, little H- so cute... and fast. Especially on stone with wet leaves :)

So, when a friend requested a last minute session of her 3 boys last week I was totally game. There was no school because of teacher's conferences, so they were home with no plans. Great...except my two were also home from school. Having just exhausted my usual babysitter the day before (aka grandparents) I wasn't sure I could swing it, until she suggested I bring them along. That's 2 of us, and 5 boys ages 1.5 - 8... no problem! She kept my two occupied (watching a movie in the car) while I tackled the task at hand. I'd say considering the circumstances, we did alright!

What a difference a few years make. About 3 yrs ago, T and EJ were in the same small preschool class...it was love at first sight (I may be embellishing) but, they were smitten nonetheless. Over the course of the next year or so, T had declared that she and EJ would one day marry. Now they're big kid elementary schoolers, and haven't seen one another in quite awhile but I still think of their cute 3 yr old selves giggling and chasing one another around. As you can see, she is absolutely beautiful and just as sweet.

And, it was on the NJ trip that I got to have a quick session with this little guy :) They are like family to us and we don't get to see them as often as we would like. We're heading into the long weekend and preparing to celebrate EJ's 6th birthday, but I wanted to post some images from Thursday's session. I last saw them almost a year ago, and mom had the same goal both times- one good one of them together for Christmas card purposes. Last year we were battling with keeping a 2 yr old boy still enough to sit with his sister. This year, he had no problem sitting or standing with her, but would do the "cheese" face LOL As is usually the case, big sister loved having her pic taken!

Rainy day fun

I had so much fun seeing these 3 again, and I absolutely love that their mom is up for anything! We got rained on- poured on in fact, and instead of packing it in she suggested letting the kids just get soaked, jump in puddles and have fun. She even had 2 of these awesome rainbow colored umbrellas. I have a lot of favorites from today, and we're actually having another session on Sat with extended family that will be visiting.

Birds of a Feather

I could probably also title this post "Another man's trash..." but I figured the bird reference was more fitting. I had the pleasure of spending yesterday afternoon in the lovely home of The Nester- if you follow home decorating blogs at all, I'm sure you know who she is and if you don't, well now you will :)
I've been a fan for some time, and she was even more fabulous in person. Also in attendance and a blogging superstar in her own right was the wonderful Kimba and Nester's sister Emily. There were also about 23 other sweet, creative women who had also traveled varying distances for the purpose of this post!

A swap. Everyone was to bring 2-3 home decor items that they were looking to part with and once everything was piled into 2 different rooms, everyone took turns picking items. SO much fun. I loved what I came away with and have plans for a few of them... first thing I picked had to be a tassel made by the Nester herself! This won't be it's permanent home, but for now it's out of reach from probing boy hands:

I also came home with a metal star and 2 frames- even better was that I was able to clear out my guest room closet of a lamp and a few other misc. items that have been in there for years!

I'm looking forward to having 2 sessions this coming week- and they're actually with the same family! We're officially finished with summer camps here, so I'll be struggling with finding activities to do for the next 2 weeks before school starts- I think we're pooled out!

Displaying photos in your home

One of my new favorite sites is The Savvy Photographer - she invited photographers to send in images of how they display photos in their own homes. Of course I had to send some in ;)
But, I do get questions a lot from clients on the best way to do this, or to come up with something different. I now give clients a printed wall display guide at the end of their session to inspire them for wall arrangements. I love photo ledges because you can easily swap the frames and pics without committing to hanging- I have a wall in our family room with 2 ledges. I have framed baby pics of both boys on those and I don't plan on swapping those out. I'm also a big fan of canvases and definitely plan on ordering more!

The Just Another Day Project...

I was inspired by Angie Warren from The Creative Mama to do this little project. With summer quickly coming to a close, it seemed like the perfect time. I know soon enough there won't be many days like this... on this day we literally did nothing. On a typical day we're out and about, but I needed to tackle some cleaning & laundry so we just hung out at home. There's everything from the toys the boys play with, what they eat, what I'm reading etc. I've given up fighting with blogger on the layout (couldn't post it as one large image) so it is what it is ;)

Happy early July 4th! This summer is going by so fast... Target already has their back to school supplies out! This is basically what our summer looks like... a lot of pool time and maybe a few drinks. ;)

July marks month #4 since my husband's layoff as well. It's definitely hard and something I wouldn't wish on anyone, but we're just trying to deal with it the best we can. Ironically, I just finished reading Bitter is the New Black and suggested my husband read it as well. There are definitely lessons to be learned from this whole situation, and like the author Jen Lancaster I think we've redefined what's important. Do we both want iPhones? Absolutely. Would we love a vacation? YES. Are there projects around the house that need attention ($$$) Most definitely. But, that's all material stuff that really doesn't matter. We're able to pay our mortgage and bills, we're all clothed and fed... anything else is just gravy.

Had a great session at a beautiful house on Lake Norman. This couple was celebrating their 40th anniversary, so the kids gifted them with a family session (something I need to do with my own family/grandparents!) I just love the ones with their grandson, and again, another boy with BEAUTIFUL eyes.

It seems like I was just doing his newborn pics, and now he's 6 months old! I couldn't believe how much he's changed... so adorable- chunky, cute hair, and he has the most beautiful eye color. I was zoomed in on one of his pics and just had to save it out to post here... they're GORGEOUS.

So hard to believe- Owen's last day of preschool was today, and EJ will finish his Kindergarten year next month. I never posted about Owen's 3rd birthday, but I did do a little shoot with him, below is one of them along with a recent shot of EJ. They're now 16x20's and hanging in the dining room. I'm getting that area ready for my open house on Sunday the 31st... I hope to see some of you there!
I'm hopeful for big things this summer... most importantly a new job for Eric. I'm considering a plea to some of his interviewers (especially wives) because kids home from school + laid off husband + loooong hot summer = not good for anyone :)

Some new goodies!

I am so excited about these frames-- I actually worked in a custom frame shop in college and it seems only natural to add this as an offering on my product list. I also know how it is when you order prints, then they sit around for what seems like an eternity... you mean to go look at frames, but forget. Or, you can't find what you're looking for so they never end up framed at all. I wouldn't carry these if I didn't love them and have them in my home myself. The pictures don't do it justice, and the options are endless!
They're gorgeous hardwood that is slightly distressed. On their own, they're simple 4" mouldings in some awesome colors, but you can also add a wavy insert or round insert that adds a little something extra to the framed piece. You can mix and match the colors for some really unique looks! They would look great in a grouping with mix and match colors etc. And, they would totally fit in with a traditional home as well as something more contemporary.

The one below is the licorice black with a vanilla wavy insert, but you can also see some of the corner samples to see a few of the colors. I would be more than happy to bring these with me to your session or when you're ready to place your order! The corner samples have velcro so you can switch up the different looks and find what you like.

A big day at the Bower house!

Owen moved into his big boy bed yesterday- we officially have no babies in the house anymore :( The crib was the last piece of gear as well, and it's already sold and out of the house. I have to do it like a band-aid- quick so I don't have time to get sentimental about it. He was so excited and did GREAT last night... just went to bed like he always does and slept from 7-7:30 without making a peep. Hopefully he repeats the same tonight!

Some shots of the finished room- I still have some more art to hang (including a super cute piece I found on etsy) I was too lazy to paint his room, so it's the same light blue/periwinkle as his nursery. Thankfully I found bedding that matches and got black furniture to make it less baby-ish.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I've enjoyed taking some time off and now I need to get back to work! I want to update my site, blog, product offerings... you name it! With the extra time I've had lately I started on some little home "improvement" projects I've been meaning to do. One of them is the guest room re-do. Our guest room is on the main floor and although we do have house guests about every other month, there is a ton of wasted space there. I decided to do an overhaul and clear out a bunch of stuff. I'm also carving out a small home office space for myself in there. Even though our office is upstairs, I never use it. I really need a place downstairs to work and keep all of my work stuff handy.
Once the dresser is out of there I can get the desk set up and finish the room off- I'll post pics when I'm done! My inspiration for the room came from these gorgeous pillow covers I got on etsy- Amy Butler goodness. :)

My favorite gift this year was from my husband- a small digital p&s. I've wanted one for awhile- there are so many times when I just don't feel like taking the big camera places and just want a quick snap of the kids doing something. So, now I have it and plan to carry it with me all the time.

Last weekend, my oldest and dearest friend of 30 yrs (eek!) was in town to visit and her husband was running in the Thunder Road marathon here in Charlotte. It was great seeing them both, and I guess by admitting that we've been friends for 30 yrs I can no longer claim to be 29 :)

because if he hadn't suggested I advertise on Facebook, I wouldn't have had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful family! I had such a great time spending the morning with them at their house, and it was definitely all boy fun (which I'm used to!)
Fall down and get clothes dirty- check
Break out the tools and fix some things- check
Feed the fish- check
Witness some very sweet big brother, little brother moments- check :)
